The research concept of the Can Tho subproject includes two research objectives:
- Optimized surface water monitoring at the HauRiver.
- Reduction of BOD and nutrients into HauRiver
Reduction of BOD and nutrient flow into the HauRiver
The University of Bonn and Biostrom AG will build a Biogas Plant at SoHa State Farm, which is one of the largest farms in the Mekong Delta (about 7,000 ha). The discharge of nutrients into surface water and groundwater will be reduced by using animal excrements to produce heat and electricity in the biogas plant. Gewitra and the University of Bonn will investigate biogas processes and optimize the biogas process. Additionally, the University of Bonn and the University of Can Tho will develop a management system for organic fertilizers from the biogas plant residues.
Optimized surface water monitoring at HauRiver
Surface water is the most important water source for water supply in the Mekong Delta. Coordinated monitoring and data exchange between the different Provincial Departments of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE) is missing at the moment. The University of Bonn, the University Can Tho, Moskito GIS GmbH and the DONREs of the provinces Can Tho, Vinh Long, An Giang Hau Giang and Soc Trang will cooperate to build up a Web based GIS and information tool for water quality.
